Understanding complex trauma: healing and hope

Discover what Complex PTSD is, how it differs from traditional PTSD, and find guidance on healing from prolonged trauma. You are not alone on this journey to recovery and empowerment.

What is complex PTSD?

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) arises from prolonged, repeated trauma, often in inescapable situations. Unlike traditional PTSD, which can result from a single event, CPTSD includes symptoms like emotional dysregulation, chronic feelings of worthlessness, and profound relationship difficulties, alongside classic PTSD symptoms like flashbacks and avoidance. This condition develops when trauma is sustained over time, impacting a person's core sense of self and their ability to relate to others and the world around them.

Causes and recognition of CPTSD

CPTSD typically results from long-term, inescapable traumatic events such as prolonged childhood abuse, human trafficking, or severe domestic violence. Recognizing CPTSD involves understanding that the trauma was not a single incident but an ongoing, pervasive experience. This prolonged exposure leads to "disturbances in self-organization" that are central to CPTSD, differentiating it from other trauma-related conditions. Early recognition is crucial for effective intervention and support.

When to Consider Coaching

Coaching is generally ideal if you are generally healthy but feel unmotivated, overwhelmed by life transitions (e.g., career shifts or relationship changes), or burned out by work-life stress. If you are experiencing high distress, recurring panic attacks, or symptoms that disrupt your daily life, licensed therapy is usually recommended.
